The tank side of a septic system is a short list of parts. There is the inlet line from the house, the inlet baffle and the tank itself. Then the outlet baffle and the outlet line heading to the drain field. Add the lids on top. When one of those fails, the system stops behaving. A missing outlet baffle lets scum and solids ride out into the field. A cracked or dropped inlet line spills waste into the yard before it ever reaches the tank. A clogged outlet backs the whole house up. Each one is a different fix.
Baffles are the part that fails most on older concrete tanks. They are also called tees. Their job is to keep the scum layer and the solids inside the tank instead of the drain field. Florida's septic rule backs this up. When a tank is kept during a repair, the rule says it has to be pumped first. It also has to have a solids deflection device at the outlet if one is missing. This is the question the open tank answers. We read the liquid level against the outlet pipe. A level sitting above the outlet means water is not leaving for the drain field. A level below the outlet usually means the tank is losing water through a crack or a bad seam. A level right at the outlet with a packed outlet baffle points at the outlet itself. Sludge and scum depth tell us whether the tank was simply overdue. All of it is visible once the lid is off and the tank is empty.
If the level says the drain field is the problem, that is a different job. Our drain field installation and replacement service handles failed fields. Season matters here in South Florida. The water table rises through the May to October wet season, and the ground is flat and sandy. A field that drains fine in February can sit in saturated soil in August. A high liquid level in the wet season can mean groundwater rather than a worn out field. We tell you which one we are looking at. Sometimes that means a second look once the ground dries out.
Florida septic permits run through the county health department office on behalf of the state. Broward, Palm Beach and Miami-Dade all work that way. Under Florida law you may not repair, modify or abandon a septic system without an approved permit. The state rule then narrows what counts as a repair. Pumping a tank is not a repair. Replacing a broken lid on a tank is not a repair. Minor structural corrections to a tank are not a repair either. Work on a failing system does need written approval before it starts.
So the answer depends on what we find in the tank. We make that call with the county office before work starts. You hear what it means for the schedule on the same call.
