A septic tank separates what leaves the house into three layers: scum floats, water sits in the middle, and solids settle into sludge on the bottom. The water flows on to the drain field — the sludge stays and builds, year after year. Pumping exists to remove that sludge before it steals the tank's working depth or rides out into the field. So a real pump-out takes all three layers, and the compacted bottom layer is the part that takes actual work.
That's where the equipment matters. We open the lid, break up the settled buildup, and vacuum the tank down to the floor with the heavy-duty vacuum truck. While it's open we look the tank over — inlet and outlet baffles, water level, signs of the field pushing water back in — and tell you plainly what we see. If something's wrong, you hear it from us at the tank, with the lid off, not as a surprise later.
The standard guidance is every three to five years for a typical household tank, and around here the honest answer leans toward the shorter end. Our water table is high, our soil is wet for half the year, and the drain field has less margin than the same field would up north. The more people in the house and the smaller the tank, the faster the sludge layer grows.
