Jupiter is the northernmost town in Palm Beach County. It sits at the mouth of the Loxahatchee River, where the inlet meets the ocean. Inside the town limits, most homes and businesses are on sewer. The Loxahatchee River District provides it from a treatment plant right here in town. The District began sewering the streets closest to the river in the 1980s. It is still working down a list today. West of Florida's Turnpike, the ground rules change. Jupiter Farms is unincorporated county land on acre-plus lots, and it runs on private wells and septic tanks. Add the older streets the sewer main never reached, and the town still holds plenty of tanks. Every one of them needs pumping on a schedule. This page is for the people who own them.

The Loxahatchee River District serves Jupiter, Tequesta and Juno Beach, plus unincorporated land in northern Palm Beach County. In the District's early years, about 3,000 septic systems sat in the area beside thirteen small treatment plants. The plants are gone, and street after street has been sewered since. The District's future list still names Jupiter Farms and nearby Palm Beach Country Estates, with no target date set. It also names private roads across the area, such as Limestone Creek Road West, Taylor Road and North A1A. Those homes stay on septic until easements come through. Recent completions are single addresses, like one on Old Jupiter Beach Road in 2024.
Jupiter Farms sits west of Florida's Turnpike along Indiantown Road, on unincorporated county land. Most lots run about an acre and a quarter, and hundreds are bigger, so horses and barns are normal. Out here, most homes run on a private well and a septic tank. The county's Jupiter Farms Neighborhood Plan says residents draw water from the surficial aquifer. It also says their septic tanks affect that same aquifer. The South Indian River Water Control District handles the canals and the grid of rural roads. Your well and your drain field share the same sand, so a tank pumped on time protects both.
Jupiter is flat and sandy, and the water sits close to the surface. The canals in Jupiter Farms feed the headwaters of the Loxahatchee River, a federally designated Wild and Scenic River. The District says older septic neighborhoods often have poor drainage and are more likely to release pollutants. From May to October the water table rises with the rain. A drain field standing in wet sand stops draining, and a full tank backs up into the house. The District's advice is a pump-out every 2 to 5 years by a licensed professional. Pumping before the wet season, and again after a big storm, keeps you ahead of it.
Jupiter's restaurants keep grease traps working hard. Harbourside Place opened in 2014 on the Intracoastal, just north of the Indiantown Road bridge. Abacoa's town center has its own restaurants near Roger Dean Stadium, and spring training brings the crowds. A trap over its limit backs up the floor drains on a Saturday night.
