Inside the city limits, not many. The South Central Regional plant's service area runs from the Atlantic Ocean west to Military Trail. The City of Delray Beach runs more than a hundred wastewater pump stations to move sewage to that plant. The older neighborhoods on the east side sit inside that area. Osceola Park lies south of downtown, Lake Ida sits beside its namesake lake, and Tropic Isle sits on deep-water canals. A septic tank on those streets is rare. Where one does turn up, it is often an older house the sewer main passed by. It still needs a pump-out every 3 to 5 years.
West of Military Trail, the county utility takes over where its lines reach. Kings Point and the Villages of Oriole use Delray Beach addresses but sit outside the city in West Delray. Past the Turnpike lies the Agricultural Reserve, more than 20,000 acres of farms and horse property. Pockets of older homes still run on a tank and a drain field. The county's own planning rules presume a septic system on any developed lot that has no sewer line at its boundary. Some streets out here stayed on septic until the lines reached them in the late 1990s. New tanks and drain field replacements out here are permitted by the Florida Department of Health in Palm Beach County.
Delray Beach is flat and sandy. The Lake Worth Drainage District runs about 500 miles of canals across this part of the county. Its E-4 canal runs straight through Lake Ida. It links the West Palm Beach Canal to the Hillsboro Canal at Boca Raton. The lateral canals west of town drain storm water off the subdivisions. From May to October the water table climbs into the sand under your drain field. A soaked drain field cannot take more water, so the tank fills and backs up into the house. A pump-out before the rains start, and another after a big storm, keeps the system working.
Atlantic Avenue is downtown's main street, known for restaurants and nightlife. Restaurants line the avenue through downtown, up to the Intracoastal bridge. More kitchens sit in Pineapple Grove, just north of the avenue. A grease trap past its limit backs up the floor drains.
